The Sleepover, by Michael Regina

A spooky but well-illustrated graphic novel by Michael Regina. The Sleepover involves four boys and one little sister who regularly sleep over at one of the boys' house on weekends. Single mom of the house has hired a nanny over the years to help watch the kids, but when the long-time nanny passes away, a new nanny brings unexpected - and spooky - events into the home. Turns out the new nanny is not anything as she seems, and the kids must use all of their courage and gaming experience to defeat her.

Labeled as a middle grade graphic novel is probably pretty accurate. The Sleepover is a bit dark for younger readers, but older elementary kids who love scary books may be excited by this release. I found the artwork to be really cool - apparently Regina started drawing in third grade! But the story itself is a little "old" for the kids being portrayed, and a little dark for my tastes. It doesn't have the fun/scary vibe I would predict from the cover and from the recommended age range of readers. Again, 5th grade could probably handle this, maybe 4th graders, too...maybe. If you love the horror genre, you'd probably like this. If not, or if you don't have the tolerance for potentially bad dream material, skip this one and enjoy a Goosebumps book, instead. 3 paws and a wag!
